Do not Grieve the Holy Spirit. The Grieving Spirit

"But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; therefore..." (Isaiah 63:10-14).

Talk about ungrateful people! God had delivered His people from slavery in Egypt. The Holy Spirit had worked in saving them, guiding them and giving them rest.  Not only had He looked after all their needs, He had ministered to them with astounding miracles.  And yet - they rebelled against God.  How the Holy Spirit must have grieved!

We all need to be appreciated and thanked when we have gone out of our way to help people.  It is no different with the Holy Spirit. It may be difficult to understand, but He is a Person with feelings.  He can be grieved or hurt, made to feel sad, suffer pain and feel hatred.  He experiences love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Because He has never sinned, He is even more sensitive than we.

"Where is He who put in the midst of them His Holy Spirit?" (Isaiah 63:11)  the Israelites complained. Because the Holy Spirit is "God in us," He was there all the time, right in front of them in a pillar of cloud and fire (Exodus 13: 21).  Sadly, they ignored Him - just as many of us ignore Him today.  It is not surprising that the only unforgivable sin is blasphemy against Him (Matthew 12:31).

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I appreciate You and thank You for all You have done for me as my Friend and Guide. Amen
